Chatfield rally comes up just short
By Dan Johnson Chatfield’s 2009 softball home opener resembled a grand fireworks show. Well, almost. The Chargers opened their cross-classification game on Aug. 28 with a big bang, cooled off in the middle innings and unleashed the cannons at the end. Unfortunately, the Chargers’ grand finale was cut off before completion. Down 4-1 against D’Evelyn, Chatfield mounted a frantic last-inning rally and had the tying run on second base but were unable to push the run across and lost 4-3. “We’re disappointed we didn’t come all the way back, but we’re happy that we did fight back...
Chatfield bats come to life
By Brian Forbes EVERGREEN — The young Chatfield Chargers needed a little love on Sept. 1. Turns out they got a whole ‘lotta Lexi Love in a 9-0 cross-classification victory over the Evergreen Cougars. “I was really proud of our team because we’ve been struggling putting runs on the board,” said Love, who slapped a five-hit muzzle on the Cougars, while walking zero batters and striking out four. The Chargers cranked out 15 hits against the Cougars, and Love’s bat was responsible in five runs crossing the plate – albeit three runs came via an error in right field during the Chargers’...
Chargers headed to state
By Dan Johnson AURORA — Chatfield was thrilled when it found out last week that it had earned one of the final at-large spots in the Class 5A 32-team softball regional tournament. You can imagine, then, their elation upon defeating Cherokee Trail 12-0 at Aurora Sports Park to clinch the second state-qualifying spot out of Region 3. “It’s an unbelievable feeling,” said senior pitcher, Lexi Love, who dominated on the mound, striking out 14 batters and allowing just two hits. “Making it to state is so special because we know it’s been a long time since a team from Chatfield has made...
