Ashway went 14-1 with an 0.73 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 96 innings. Elbow problems kept Alcorn off the mound for much of the season but her play at... |

Lady Titans exact revenge, advance to PIAA semifinals Shaler Area head softball coach Skip Palmer has been spot on with his predictions in the playoffs this year. When his team got into the WPIAL bracket, he said his team was capable of doing some damage. They advanced to the WPIAL title game after being the underdog in each of the first three games. When they finished second to Hempfield, Palmer shook hands with Hempfield head coach Bob Kalp, saying that he would see him in the second round.
The Lady Titans lived up to Palmer's prediction, and... |
Shaler Looking Forward to Title Game Despite being the lower seed in each of their first two playoff games, the Shaler softball team polished off McKeesport, then exacted some revenge on the team that defeated them in the WPIAL finals last year, as they turned back Latrobe 5-3.
The Lady Titans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead when Gina Goss drove the ball deep to the outfield with the bases juiced for a lead that looked untouchable.
Behind pitcher Abby Nichter, the Lady Titans were solid. Chelsea Siar played a flawless game... |
 | Shaler, Mt. Lebanon Set for Rematch When the Shaler and Mt. Lebanon softball teams faced off March 20 in the season opener, both coaches figured they'd cross paths again.
"We both had a feeling that we would be meeting again," said Shaler coach Skip Palmer, including Mt. Lebanon coach Nicole Fajtak in the intuitive thought process. "So it's no surprise that we are playing Mt. Lebanon again."
But this matchup has much more significance than the 1-0 victory by Shaler. The two squads face off today in the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals... |
Lady Titans, Royals look the part Shaler also gets a boost from the win, as they had some scoring opportunities at different points in the game and their defense played well behind pitcher Abby Nichter. Catcher Lauren Hackett made two plays on pop ups behind the plate, and Chelsea Siar looked stronger than ever at short. |
 | HS Softball Roundup: Shaler Area moves on to semifinals The Shaler Area girls' softball team chipped away, scoring single runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to earn a 5-1 victory against Trinity (12-7) at Fairhaven Park in a WPIAL Class AAAA quarterfinal matchup yesterday.
Shaler (15-4) used solo home runs from Chelsea Siar in the third and Stevie Stanek in the sixth, and also got two RBIs from Jenna Conrad.
Megan Daley earned the pitching victory, striking out six and yielding six hits.
The Titans' victory sets up a semifinal matchup... |
 | PG North: Despite changes, Shaler softball is still a section-title contender Shaler Area shortstop Chelsea Siar pulls in a fly ball during a game last week against Seneca Valley. Shaler defeated the Raiders in the Section 3-AAAA contest, 4-3.
With a new pitcher, an influx of freshmen and upperclassmen changing positions, this Shaler Area softball team looks drastically different than last year's.
So far, the new-look Titans are off to a better start than last year's club and, considering where last year's team ended up -- in the WPIAL Class AAAA title game and PIAA... |
Shaler finds right mix to beat Trinity McKEES ROCKS - Normally, strong pitching performances win high school softball playoff games.
But Shaler's formula Monday was one part metal added to one part mettle.
The Titans, one of the top seeds in the WPIAL Class AAAA playoffs, shook off a slow start, played strong defense and cracked two home runs in a 5-1 victory over Trinity at Fairhaven Park.
The win advanced Shaler into the semifinals against Seneca Valley, a 10-2 winner over Kiski. The top two teams in Class AAAA qualify for... |

Once again, Shaler softball team has look of a champion Shaler Area has won two state softball championships over the past three seasons and the Titans figure to be in the thick of the PIAA championship picture again this season.
Shaler (2-0, 1-0) has six returning starters from its state championship team that went 20-7 last year. This includes junior pitcher Heather Elstner.
Elstner, a PG All-Area honoree last year, had a 17-4 record with an ERA of 0.60. She pitched 14 shutouts. She was especially strong in the state playoffs, giving up just... |
