FALL RIVER — Taunton High School used the long ball to spoil an excellent effort by Durfee High School Tuesday, defeating the Hilltoppers, 4-1, in a non-league girls softball game.
The Tigers received a solid pitching performance from Colleen Kirby and got back-to-back home runs from Jess Moitoza and Jess Kirby in the third inning, en route to their second victory in three games.
Kirby went the distance, scattering nine hits, striking out eight and did not walk a batter to pick up the victory.
Amanda Cordeiro turned in a good effort in the Durfee circle, yielding seven hits, walking two and striking out two, and was backed by an outstanding defense.
“Amanda (Cordeiro) did a nice job,” said Durfee coach Steve Winarski.
“We played very good defense,” Winarski added. “We were a little too aggressive on the bases.”
Caitlyn Carey and third baseman Guilia Khoury spearheaded the Hilltopper defense, which turned several difficult batted balls into outs and played errorless ball throughout.
The Durfee offense was not errorless, running into outs in the first and third innings, both times attempting to advance an extra base against all odds and both times killing rallies.
Kirby mixed fastballs on the inside part of the plate with a nasty change-up to keep Durfee at bay. “She (Kirby) kept us off balance with her change-up, especially after Taunton gained the lead,” said Winarski.
Ariel Hallisey and Caitlin Carey led the Hilltoppers hit parade each with a pair of singles and seven of Durfee’s starting unit recorded hits.
A Shelby Phillips single, two-run Moitoza homer and Furtado solo blast accounted for three Taunton runs in the third inning and the Tigers added an insurance tally in the seventh when Cassie Dutra doubled and scored on a Phillips single.
Durfee’s run came in the third inning when Hallisey singled, sped to third on a Carey hit and scored on a delayed double steal.
