Head coach Jeff Compton's Lady Eagle softball team finished a very successful season, winning the Mountain League tournament championship last Saturday in Jasper. The tournament capped off a perfect season with the team finishing 12-0 and outscoring their opponents 91-15.
The week began with an away contest at Gilmer County Tuesday, Sept. 18. Riverview dismantled the Lady Bobcats 12-0. All 12 players reached base either via a hit or walk. "We have been working on out hitting and it really paid off," Compton said.
On Thursday, Sept. 20 Riverview traveled to Jasper Middle School. Once again the Lady Eagles were victorious winning 5-0. Riverview could not get anything to fall until the third inning when they finally managed to push across five runs.
Riverview entered the league tournament with a first round game against Pickens County at the Lady Dragons home diamond. Earlier in the season the Lady Eagles thrashed Pickens 10-0. This game wasn't much different as Compton's team came away with an easy 12-0 shutout.
White County was Riverview's next opponent in the championship game. The Lady Eagles prevailed 5-2 to take the league championship and cap an undefeated season.
The Lady Eagles would strike first and would never look back. Lady Eagle Gracy Hovan scored the first run for Riverview in the bottom of the first inning. Hovan would also bring across 3 RBI's for the game. Jenna Abbott also had a big day at the plate. Abbott went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI's.
Abbott pitching was a thing to behold. Catcher Kimberly Wallace and Abbott would combine for 18 Lady Warrior strikeouts.
Kayla Scandera, Natalie Burt and Madalyn Walters also got a hit or walk in the contest. Lora Beth Brown, Taylor Shirley and Anna Torres each crossed the plate with runs for Riverview.
"I believe one of our biggest successes this year was just having fun. I am truly going to miss each and every player on this team. It has been a great softball season," Compton remarked about his team and the season.
He added, "The hitting was great all year, and I cannot say enough about the pitching by Jenna Abbott and the catching skills of Kimberly Wallace. These two were phenomenal all season. The hitting from the first batter to the ninth batter was threat to the opponent. There was not weak spot in our line up."
Members of this years championship team are: Gracie Hovan, Jenna Abbott, Kimberly Wallace, Carly Gilreath, Morgan Huber, Lora Beth Brown, Madalyn Walters, Natalie Burt, Taylor Shirley, Kayla Scandera, Kenna Seitz, and Anna Torres Coaches were Jeff Compton and Karen Spencer. This year's manager was Amanda Vinson.
