BYU Softball announces five signees 12/07/12
PROVO, Utah - Two all-state MVP’s, two Virginia standouts, and a first-team all-state shortstop will join the BYU softball program for the 2014 season. McKenna Bull, Lauren Bell, Ashley Thompson, Alexa Strid and Sydney Broderick will all be joining the program for its first year in the West Coast Conference.
Thompson, a pitcher from Connell High School in Connell, WA., is a two-time ESPN West Player of the Week and a two-time Washington All-State MVP. Thompson helped her team to back-to-back state championships in 2010 and 2011. She currently holds the state high school single season home run record with 23 and is also the record holder in single season RBIs with 90. With an all-time record of 59-6 from the circle, Thompson has 736 strikeouts through her junior year. She also plays for the Washington Explosion Gold and her club team has won seven Washington state championships.“We are extremely excited that Ashley chose BYU,” Eakin said. “She was highly recruited by some of the best programs in the country and will be a player that changes games both offensively and defensively. She is very strong and athletic. She has the potential to be a dominant pitcher and will add power to our offensive line up. The kid can flat out hit. As a coach that loves strong offensive teams, Ashley has the ability to exceed my expectations.”
Connell softball tops Walla Walla 03/26/13
History didn’t repeat itself when the Connell and Walla Walla softball teams met Tuesday at Walla Walla’s Murr Field.
Connell, which lost by nine runs last season to 2011 Class 4A state champion Wa-Hi, shut down the Blue Devils 5-0 this time.
Ashley Thompson struck out 14 for the reigning two-time Class 1A state champ Eagles (7-0). She was coming off Saturday’s sterling performance, when she struck out 18 in a perfect game against Hanford and recorded another 18 strikeouts in a win over defending Class 3A state champion Kamiakin.
“She threw a great game against us,” Walla Walla coach Kate Keyes said via telephone. “She’s an excellent pitcher. She had a lot of stuff, and she’s quick. It took us some time to adjust. If it were a doubleheader, we might have been able to put a few more hits together.”

Pitching pulls Eagles past Blue Devils 03/26/13
Connell senior pitcher Ashley Thompson proved to be more than Wa-Hi could handle during non-conference softball action Tuesday afternoon at Murr Sports Park. Thompson, who has already signed a national letter-of-intent to further her softball career at Brigham Young University, struck out 14 and overcame six walks as the two-time defending Class 1A state champion Eagles soared to a 5-0 victory over the Blue Devils. “She was digging pretty deep,” Connell coach Andy Sawyer said. “It’s an everyday occurrence — a lot of strikeouts. She attacked them pretty good.Thompson struck out six of the first seven hitters she faced before issuing a one-out walk to Lauren Likes in the third. Likes advanced as far as second base, but no further
Wa-Hi’s best scoring opportunity came in the fifth when it loaded the bases with one out. But Thompson struck out Libbie Jimenez and Kendsey Hill popped out to second to end the threat. #“She needs to feel that pressure,” Sawyer said. “She’s matured into a great mental pitcher. She takes care of business — both physically and mentally.”
Thompson's big day leads Connell to wins over Hanford, Kamiakin 03/23/13
Hours after striking out all 18 batters she faced in a perfect game against Hanford, Thompson had 18 more Ks as two-time defending Class 1A state champion Connell beat reigning Class 3A champ Kamiakin 6-1 at Columbia Playfield in Richland. “She’s the real deal,” Kamiakin coach Tim Bisson said of the BYU-bound Thompson. “She had 18 strikeouts against us. There’s a reason she’s D-I.”The Braves went down 1-2-3 in the last three innings, with Thompson recording seven Ks. It wasn’t as easy as it looked, especially on her arm. “I knew I had to stay mentally tough,” Thompson said. “I knew I could not break down, no matter what.” Her teammates gave her the run support she needed.“I’m so proud of everyone,” she said. “Everyone’s been doing a phenomenal job. I think that we’re going to do pretty well this year.” Bisson believes they will do more than that.“They should win another state title,” he said. “I can’t imagine someone’s going to beat them."

Whether it’s hitting or pitching, Thompson is one of the best in the West this season. Earlier this season, the 2011 Class 1A State Player of the Year had a no-hitter and hit two homers in a win over Riverside (Chattaroy, Wash.). She led Connell to the Class 1A state title last season and had 18 strikeouts in the state final.

Connell Varsity Softball dominated Play in Royal City
Connell Softball Captures Royal City Tournament
05/08/2010 – Connell Varsity Softball dominated play in the “Royal City Fast Pitch Invitational Tournament” this Saturday, May 8. With some key players injured and bruised up, Coach Andy Sawyer still was able to put a line up together that dominated.
Connell beat Seattle Christian 10-0, Mosses Lake 2-0 in extra innings, and a very tough Cascade HS team 6-4 to capture the title. Freshman Ashley Thompson pitched all three games, striking out 35 batters, and allowing only six hits on the day.
Juniors Kate Hawk and Kayla Bjorge and senior Yese Lombaro topped all hitters. Excellent defense was cited by Hawk at first base and senior Shannon Jorgenson behind the plate

Washington East / Idaho North
Though we were expecting only athletes from the Class of 2011 today, it was a young pitcher from the Class of 2013 who stole the show. Ashley Thompson, a 6-foot tall 14 year-old from Connell High School, put on a show for us all day while her father, also Connell's Assistant fast pitch coach, watched in approval. Ashley's day-best 70.62 SPARQ rating was highlighted by her explosive 21.4 inch vertical jump and 38-foot powerball toss, putting her long frame to good use. Despite her impressive athletic display, it was her performance on the field that really turned heads. This girl stepped up to the plate and absolutely rocked the ball to every corner of the field, and when she took the mound her velocity and control looked virtually unhittable. With her two sure-handed 17 year-old teammates Kayla Bjorge (65.58 SPARQ rating) and Kate Hawk (61.71) playing centerfield and third base respectively, you can bet you'll find Connell High School at the top of its league standings next season. Look for us tomorrow as we round-up top fast pitch players from the region in the Class of 2012.
